Genesis 19:1-9 Time To Have "That Talk"

The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth 2 and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” … so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. 4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” 6 Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, 7 and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. 8 Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.” 9 But they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door down.” Genesis 19:1–9

Although there are few physical descriptions of angelic beings in the Bible, one can assume they are exceptional in stature and beauty. This might explain why everyone in this town goes into a mad frenzy over them. Why would Lot show respect and hospitality to them, yet everyone else in town goes wild with violence and desire?

Through the influence of his uncle Abraham, Lot knows God, has walked alongside His spirit, lived under His influence. The people of Sodom do not know – or have rejected – God. They do not walk with His spirit. By their own choice, God has no influence on their lives.

At our base physical core, we are sexual beings. This is by design. Without sex there would be no future generations. Because God made sex a pleasurable act, it also has become the primary way Satan pulls us away from a relationship with God. God is not against sex. He made it for us. But without moderation or control, anything good can become sin – and sin is whatever comes between us and our heavenly Father.

The men of Sodom are extreme examples of how the desire for sex, the rush of endorphins released in our brain, can become a god in our lives. Contrary, when we look at sex as a gift from God, a beautiful and holy and, yes, pleasurable act between two people who have committed their minds and bodies to each other, such a relationship brings each closer to Him because they are experiencing a joy He’s given us by design.

Letting sexual desire drive our actions and thoughts, however, will bring isolation. An act meant to bring people together in the most intimate way possible can just as easily breed loneliness. There are so many examples of this truth throughout human history – perhaps even our own lives.

Let God’s love for us and desire to live in healthy communion with others be our motivation. Sex is one of many gifts He’s given us since the world began. We can abuse it, or celebrate it as such with responsibly with thanksgiving. This choice will always be ours to make.

Prayer

Lord, help me to see physical intimacy as a gift from you, my God, and not as a god itself. For any gods we put before You eventually leads to misery and destruction.
